Mechanical Testing Of DMLS Parts

We have a new white paper in our DMLS Resource Library that discusses mechanical testing of DMLS parts from one of the leading manufacturers of Electro Optical Systems (EOS).

This technical whitepaper discusses some really important topics which are happening right now with DMLS.  As noted in the study, Laser-sintering is a generative layer manufacturing technology and is the key technology for e-Manufacturing.  DMLS is fast, flexible, and cost effective because it’s produced directly from electronic data.

Highly complex three-dimensional geometries are begin built efficiently and automatically without any tools or costly milling path programming.

In a nutshell, DMLS is a production method for creating metal parts.  It takes 3D geometry data in the form of a CAD file or scanned data, slices it into layers via software and laser exposure vectors are calculated for each layer of the build.  In the machine, super thin layers of metal powder are applied onto a powder bed.  This powder bed is selectively exposed using a scanned, focused laster beam.  The energy of the beam melts the metal powder in the exposed areas creating a metallic bond to the surrounding exposed material including the previous area.

It is important for designers to have sufficient information and understanding of the mechanical properties of the resulting parts, in order to design for the required part performance. The purpose of this white paper is to provide recommen- dations for suitable test procedures for DMLS parts.
